It’s that time again. For the newbies, the phrases in bold are search terms that people used to find and click on my blog.

Oh that pesky “D” key, right next to the “S” key! And this is Disneyland, but here’s my advice.

scary halloween parade floats

If you’re looking for scary, Disneyland is not your place, unless you’re riding Snow White’s Scary Adventure (which lives up to its name) or Pinocchio’s Daring Journey (which is sneaky with its scary, since you don’t realize it’s scary until you reach the seriously creepy jack in the box clown dude, and then it’s all downhill from there). And here’s the Halloween parade floats.

which do people like better pillowpets or those other things

Well I don’t know about you, but I like those other things better.

going to disney with in laws, not excited

My condolences. I really lucked out when I got married because my in-laws are great people. Not annoying at all! Plus they live close-by and babysit frequently, so that’s cool. But here’s my in-law advice (oh, and when people say “Disney” they usually mean Disney World, but it’s my blog so I’m going to talk about Disneyland)–one, develop a mystery condition that requires you to take frequent “naps” during which you can go to the other park (CA Adventure if you’re in Disneyland or Disneyland if you’re in CA Adventure). Two, Profess loudly that you’re not leaving the property until you ride [whatever] 20 times, with [whatever] being either the ride they hate or the one they can’t go on (it’s not necessary to actually ride this ride). Three, CA Adventure has alcohol, if you’re into that.

Yes! My great triumph for The’s 2.5th birthday!

It took me 4 and 1/2 hours to make this. I started at 10pm the night before the party.

what will become of aladdin’s bazaar in disneyland

I just love this phrasing. “What will become…” It’s so Victorian or something. Well, the bazaar is a store and I think that’s pretty much staying, but the meet and greet is the former Tahitian Terrace, then Aladdin dinner experience (not its real name) and now it’s just taking up space looking like it would be a great place for a dinner show (which it would). Although actually, there’s a fundraiser where for some large amount of money you can eat at the Tahitian Terrace with a private show for One! Night! Only!, but I don’t have that kind of cash. And to answer the question, Disney hasn’t made any announcements as far as what they want to do with the space.

Top 10 Reasons Why Non-Disneyland Fans Should Read My Year With The Mouse

I know you know these people–their eyes kind of glaze over when you start talking about how much you love Disneyland, and when you mention the most awesome Disneyland blog in existence they think (or even SAY! *gasp*) “why should I read a Disneyland blog when I don’t even particularly like Disney?”

Well, my friends, here’s 10 good reasons why:

10. To better understand the Disney lover in your life

Let’s face it–people can be a mystery sometimes. For the non-Disneyland lover, having a spouse/significant other/family member/friend who loves Disneyland can be downright baffling. Well, MYWTM can help you bridge that gap by allowing a glimpse into their Mickey Mouse-obsessed psyche.

9. Chicks dig Disney lovers

Yep guys (and girls)–it’s true. Chicks love guys (and girls) who love Disneyland. It really shows off your sensitive side.

8. Makes for great small talk at parties

Are you a wallflower who ends up huddled by the drink table all by yourself like a really awkward high schooler in a John Hughes movie at parties thrown by your supposed friends who end up ignoring you? Or have you been the sympathy invite to someone else’s holiday party because you had nowhere else to go and spending Thanksgiving with a bunch of strangers is slightly better than spending it with your cell mate? Well my introverted friends, take a few minutes to browse MYWTM and discover sure-fire conversation starters like “Wow, have you seen the ads for Cars Land? Luigi’s Flying Tires are like riding on a human air hockey table!” or “Hey, did you know that Walt had an apartment inside of Disneyland? That’s right–it’s above the fire house!” or “I didn’t realize it before I read this really cool blog, but Pincchio’s Daring Journey is actually a pretty terrifying ride.”

7. Mediocre photography

If you’re any kind of photography enthusiast or know anything about cameras, reading MYWTM will leave you with the smug satisfaction of knowing that in all likelihood, you’re a better photographer than I am.

For example…

6. My Year With The Mouse is not going to get you in trouble at work.

MYWTM is safe for work and family-friendly! If you get fired after reading MYWTM, it’s probably because of your overall internet usage and not the content of this site.

5. Learn some great pick-up lines

Like “Hey baby, I’d love to hold your hand as we watch fireworks over Sleeping Beauty’s castle,” or “Hey baby, no one in the Princess Fantasy Faire holds a candle to your beauty” or “Hey baby, I’d love to make a wish at Snow White’s grotto with you.” On second thought, leave out the “Hey baby.” It’s kind of smarmy.

4. My Year With The Mouse is cheaper than a drug habit.

Reading MYWTM doesn’t cost you a penny, and you really can quit anytime.

3. One day you might be dragged to Disneyland (possibly against your will)

I know many people swear that they will never step foot in a Disney park, but then along comes children or nieces and nephews or Disney-fanatic in-laws offering you a “free vacation” that isn’t entirely optional, so if/when this happens to you, reading MYWTM will prepare you for what you can reasonably expect to find.

2. You might accidentally like Disneyland and find yourself with an unsettling desire to plan your own trip

I realize this might be a liability rather than a true reason to follow this blog, but keep an open mind, okay?

1. I’m funny

At least I try to be. And I’m modest too!

So please, be my guest and take a look around the site, or encourage your non-Disney loving friends/family to do so as well. And if you do end up liking it, be sure to friend me on Facebook and follow me on Twitter @myyearwithmouse!

What Have I Been Doing With My Time?

Well I’ll tell you! MYWTM has been a little neglected lately but I promise I have a good excuse…

I wrote a master’s thesis!

That’s a good excuse, right?

For the last two years I’ve been working on an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults at Vermont College of Fine Arts. VCFA is a low-residency program in which I traveled to Montpelier, VT twice a year, July and January–yes, January…

Dude, I live in CALIFORNIA!

…for a 10-day intensive residency, and in between residencies I’ve worked individually with a faculty advisor. The semester consisted of 5 “packets,” each due about 4 weeks apart, with each packet containing at least 40 pages of creative work, critical essays, and an annotated bibliography of 8-10 books. Every month. The work load was…more than I expected. My third semester I wrote a critical thesis, and this semester, my final, I wrote a creative thesis.

Which I turned in yesterday.

It’s 90 pages of a young adult novel. Holy smokes, mouse fans! Oh, and looking at my program bibliography, I read approximately 224 books over the last two years.

Oh, and I also wrote a 50-minute lecture on a writing topic that I will deliver in July.

My creative thesis is in the hands of my advisor. All that’s left to do is to make those final changes she notes, then format everything properly (and anyone who’s ever written a thesis or dissertation can tell you that will take hours and hours) and turn it all in. I have one final residency in July *sniff* at the end of which, I will graduate!!!!!

I also have a 3-year-old, who takes up a little bit of time. 😉

So, my friends, it’s been a busy couple of years for me, and a busy last few weeks for sure, but I’m very proud to say that I made it!

New Disney content coming tomorrow–little brain dead right now ;).
